Cottiers are workers who are paid in land rather than money.They each received a cabin and a plot of land to grow potatoes , landless labourers were only paid a few pence and the rents per year would probably be alot such as £2 which was alot back then , if people didn't have the money when the landlord came they'd be evicted or be able to emigrate.
